Experience a piece of Burgundy magic when you stay at our two-bedroom, two-bathroom house in the historic town of Semur-en-Auxois in lovely Burgundy, France. Let us offer you our own private getaway, which is perfectly situated on the banks of the Armancon River. Semur-en-Auxois is a countryside town big enough to give you access to everything you might need, but small enough to welcome you with open arms.
Our house is located just a short walk away from the town center, on a tiny street bordered on one side by the river and on the other by a rock cliff. This means that it is private and tranquil, yet has easy access to all the amenities of the wonderful town of Semur.
The house is arranged on three levels: the upper and lower bedrooms are split by a main level containing the kitchen, salon, and one of the house's two bathrooms.
During the spring, roses climb the side of the house, and we cultivate several types of flowers all around the property. Eat a quiet lunch on the river-level patio with the accompaniment of the birds. Read a book in our upper garden, which has lovely views of one of the town's ramparts (a remnant of the castle around which the town was originally built).
The Upper Bedroom
Single couples who stay with us usually stay in the upper bedroom, which is located above the kitchen. It is a spacious room with wood floors, a queen-sized bed, and two reading areas on either side of the French doors leading to the balcony.
Check your e-mail on your laptop with our internet connection (provided at no extra charge), and enjoy the panoramic view from the balcony. Between the dresser and the built-in closet, there's plenty of space for you to unpack and make yourself at home!
The Kitchen
Our kitchen maintains its French Country charm while also providing modern conveniences like a full-sized refrigerator, stove, oven, and dishwasher. Whether you prefer tea or coffee (or both), we have an electric kettle and two kinds of coffee makers. If you get distracted feeding the ducks with yesterday's leftover baguettes, use the microwave to re-heat your tea.
We take care to keep the cabinets stocked with basics like salt, sugar, tea, olive oil, herbs, and spices. Along with plenty of utensils, dishes, and all the pots and pans you need to prepare a meal, there is plenty of counter space. The kitchen table seats up to six (though four are more comfortable), and the oversized kitchen window opens right out onto the river.
The Salon
Our favorite room in the house is the Salon, and we think you will agree. Two full walls of windows offer panoramic views of the river, the ramparts, and all the charm of our part of Semur. There is ample seating, with two couches, two single-person leather chairs, and a breakfast nook for two.
One of the sofas can expand into a queen-sized bed -- just let us know and we will provide extra linens and towels. If you do have extra guests sleeping on the couch, they can pull the curtain across the doorway for privacy and use the drawers in the side tables for clothes storage.
With all the room's seating, most of our clients spend the majority of their time at the house in the Salon. For those occasional rainy days, we have provided a stereo/CD player and a DVD/VHS player (we have a selection of movies, but you can also bring your own: the DVD player is region-free). With a USB cable, plug in your iPod to play music, or your camera to show your photos (using the DVD player).
The Lower Bedroom
The lower bedroom is the perfect hideaway for older children; for two couples traveling together, the lower bedroom is like its own separate rental. It is accessible via a separate entrance at river level (just off the patio), and has an en-suite bathroom with a shower.
The two twin beds may be kept separate or brought together into a king bed; just let us know, and we will arrange the room however you wish. The dresser and built-in closets provide plenty of storage.

The Patio
The patio has a stone table and bench, perfect for taking meals by the river or nursing a glass of wine acquired at one of the nearby vineyards.
Steps from the patio lead directly to the water. Children, or inner children, love to watch the fish swim about and tempt the ducks with pieces of day-old bread (of course, children should be accompanied at all times).
Semur-en-Auxois is a medium-sized town, which balances the availability of modern amenities with a quaint feel and welcoming nature. It is among a group of towns in France with the title Stations Vertes de Vacances. To quote the official tourism website for Burgundy, "Stations Vertes de Vacances are picturesque towns or villages in France’s rural or mountain areas. They have all signed a Quality Charter pledging them to uphold the locality’s natural beauty and to offer reception and accommodation facilities in a protected environment."
As the Armancon River winds its way through the countryside of the Cote d'Or, it makes a loop as it passes through Semur-en-Auxois. Our house is located just outside the original town wall, so we have a panoramic view of the ramparts that were used to protect the town in medieval times.
The pedestrian area of Semur is home to restaurants and cafes, as well as unique shops and boutiques. There is a chocolatier here who has been selling assorted sweet indulgences for 500 years, and a wine shop that can usually arrange to send your carefully-packaged purchases home.
If you're not in the mood to shop, though, have a seat and a glass of wine and just enjoy the ambience.
Once you step outside of Semur, there are many things to see and do nearby. If you crave outdoor activities, visit the magnificent Morvan nature park or the Lac du Pont for some nearby fishing. Historical sights include the Abbey at Fontenay (not to be missed) and Alesia, the site of Caesar's victory over the Gallic forces. If you prefer to take a gastronomic tour, the countryside is dotted with some of the finest vineyards in the world. Also nearby is the town of Epoisses, origin of one of the top-rated artisanal cheeses in France.
During the summer, the ramparts are lit up each night -- the view from the house is truly breathtaking. The mid-August Assumption Holiday includes a 30-minute fireworks display, made more incredible by the fact that the show takes place over the river. If you happen to be staying at the house during this week, you are in for an extremely memorable experience.
