The term itself originated in relation to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an influential group of mid 19th-century avante garde painters associated with Ruskin who had great effect upon British, American, and European art.

The artwork depicts a woman under influence of Laudanum - an opium-related drug used in the mid and late 19th century and popular then amongst Montmartre artists and prostitutes.
