Finca Fernandez was originally a mandarin growing farm and has been sympathetically restored to provide holiday accommodation of two typically Andalucian houses which can be leased separately out of high season, or together at any time. SLEEPS 7 PERSONS, when using sofa bed.
We provide our guests, who have a week minimum booking, with a small welcome pack on arrival and any seasonal produce from the finca,- avocados, plums, mandrarins, tomatoes, lemons, oranges, kumquats, satsumas, etc
Villa Rosa has three bedrooms and is also laid out on one storey, although there is a step inside the house leading to the sleeping area, which would make the house a little difficult for a disabled person. There are two shower bathrooms in this property. There is a double bed in one room, two twins in each of the other rooms and all have fitted wardrobes with plenty of books again to make your stay enjoyable.
The kitchen is well equipped, with a large refrigerator / freezer, free standing cooker, washing machine, ironing board, iron, microwave oven, toaster, kettle, etc., This house also has Sky TV, internet broadband access, Playstation 2, portable CD/MP3 player and a video player. There is a private patio, table, chairs and large sun awning. All bed linen and towels are provided, although we ask you to bring your own beach towels.
Villa Rosa interior:
Sipping a Tinto de Verano ( wine of the Summer ) whilst reclining in the soothing jets of the 6 seat Jacuzzi, looking up at the mountains or the clear stars, unpolluted by town light, is an unforgettable experience, not to be missed. We live on site, next door, but unseen from your accommodation and last year, we added a Jacuzzi and opened our further gardens, mandarin grove with two fish ponds and fountain for your enjoyment, two nights per week.
"Lovely welcome from our hosts, Mac and Sue. Homely, traditional villa overlooking the mountains and valley. Very comfortable accommodation and setting. All in all, excellent value for money."
Mike and Kelly, Kent UK
From the highest of the three terraces, you can see the bay of the Costas and Torremolinos and in August, you can even enjoy the night time fireworks of Malaga’s big annual feria or fiesta from the balcony. There are lovely, mature Mediterranean style gardens to the rear of the houses with a quaint, shaded patio area. In front of the villas, is a third sun bathing terrace which is huge and can accommodate many guests for parties, weddings, etc., and a built in BBQ area with outdoor, shaded seating for twelve or more, perfect for long, lazy afternoon dining or midnight suppers. This terrace is normally laid out with comfortable wooden sun beds and tables for our holidaymaking guests to enjoy. There are more gardens to the side of the houses.
This area is open two nights per week. The comfortable private guest bar is situated next to the jacuzzi. Guests are welcome to provide their own drinks here and enjoy the lovely views and further gardens. In the guest’s private area, the heated pool, heated to 27 degrees, has a flood light and outside shower. There are few neighbours to bother you.
It is a very attractive area with green orchards, olive plantations, orange and lemon groves and is known as the gardens of the Costa del Sol. In fact, hundreds of years ago, the Moors even named Alhaurin ‘the Garden of Allah’. In Springtime, wild flowers abound, filling every space with blood red poppies, wild sweet peas, rare orchids and the smell of wild mountain herbs. The white villages give way to the marinas, long sandy beaches and shops of the coast with long lazy promenades, wonderful fresh fish restaurants and plethora of activities to enjoy.
Our Village:
La Alqueria, which is about 8 mins walk away, boasts no less than three bar/restaurants and even hosts its own little feria in late summer. One of the restaurants, very popular with the locals, serves a speciality from the area, stewed snails "caricoles" which are always in demand and the owner prepares wonderful tapas served with chips fried in olive oil and salted before frying. Another owner serves a tasty tapas of pork lomo or fillet, cooked in red butter whilst the third hosts open air BBQs every weekend during summer. There is a small shop and church in the village.
Alhaurin el Grande and Alhaurin de la Torre:
We are only 5 mins by car/ bus from either town where you will find plenty of bars, nightlife, discos, shops, supermarkets, restaurants, sports complex, indoor swimming pool and so on. The latter is an up market residential town for those commuting to work on the coast whilst El Grande is a market town—market day is Thursday. Roman ruins have been found in both. The nearest hospital is at Alhaurin de la Torre and there is a 24 hr medical centre there.
Distances (time by car):
Lauro golf course 2 mins (we are next door) plus 60 more within easy driving distance. See activity page for details
Nearest supermarket, doctor 5 mins - Beach, Playa Mayor 15 mins (Torremolinos, Fuengirola 20 mins)
Malaga Int Airport, Malaga, Port, Railway, 15 to 20 mins - Chorro Lakes 40 mins - Flamingo Lake (Laguna de la Fuente de Piedra) 50 mins - Marbella, Puerto Banus 45 mins - Nerja 1 hr - Estepona 1 hr 10 mins - Granada, Gibraltar 1½ hrs (Morocco + 45 mins by ferry) - Jerez 1¾ hrs - Ronda, Seville 2 hrs -Sierra Nevadas (skiing and the Alpujarras) 2½ hrs
"The place is a fantastic retreat and we enjoyed every part of it. We want to thank you for letting us stay in this beautiful and tranquil piece of heaven ! Had such a great time that words are difficult to find to express this place. We will return!"
Jo and Robert, Epsom, UK
Finca Fernandez is an ideal base to explore from, whether your interests are sports and the outdoors, the beaches and hot lazy days, or history and culture, Andalucia has it all, in abundance.
Outdoor Pursuits:
Our son-in-law has an Adventure Consultancy business and can tailor make trips for you ranging from snow skiing, gorge walking, downhill cycling, even kite surfing. He can also hire cycles to you.
Cycling:
is very popular in this area and we are ideally located for the major cycling routes.
Bird watching:
A twitcher guest counted no less than thirty species in a day in our garden. This is the first stop for the birds migrating from Africa. Spring brings the flamingos
( visit Laguna de la Fuente de Piedre, breeding ground of the wild flamingo—50 mins drive ), irridescent honeybee eaters, swallows and in summer, the eagles continuously circle overhead in the village on the hot thermals over the village in summer.
Clay pigeon shooting:
Gun club is 5 mins drive and a paint ball shooting area nearby.
Tennis:
Lew Hoad’s famous tennis club is about 25 mins drive away plus there are public courts in both Alhaurin towns.
Sports and Water Sports:
Jet skiing, boat trips, scuba diving, dolphin watching, water skiing, deep sea fishing on the coast plus Alhaurin el Grande has a new indoor sports and swimming pool complex. There are two Aqua Parks in Torremolinos and Fuengirola, Seaworld and several interesting marinas on the coast, including Benalmadena.
Hiking:
There are some lovely parks and trails in this area but October to spring are best times for walking.
Horse riding I ride in Alhaurin el Grande in the evenings in summer. Many people have their own horses, of course, and the Andalucians are renowned for their horsemanship and beautiful horses.
RONDA:
See the dramatic gorge and the oldest bull ring in Spain, a lovely drive from here.
ALHAMBRA PALACE:
at Granada—make sure you book in advance
MALAGA:
People are surprised when I suggest the city but you will find it fascinating if you go off down the side streets and look at the beautiful architecture, the port, the castle and don’t forget the feria in the second week of August , the largest in our province. Try chilled Malaga sweet wine in one of the old bodegas with a plate of cold prawns or go to the lovely old indoor market and shopping is wonderful, ladies ! Picasso museum, birthplace of the artist.
SIERRA NEVADAS:
Visit the little Moorish villages high up in the Alpujarras. Chris Stewart from ‘Driving Over Lemons’ fame, lives near Orgiva, which is a charming little mountain village, nestling in the valley, with its own well established hippy colony close by. It’s worth going if only for the free tapas in the bars, one of the few places left in Spain that actually does serve them free unless you go to the far North. Good for ceramics and nick nacks.
CHORRO LAKES:
No need for beaches when there are the beautiful lakes at Chorro. Stop at the dam and see the railway where Von Ryan’s Express was filmed.
JEREZ:
Go sherry tasting and savour the architecture of this fine city.
SEVILLE:
Another beautiful city, known for culture, flamenco and architecture.
CAVES AT NERJA:
Spectacular illuminated cave system.
MIJAS:
Ride a donkey through the cobbled streets of the charming nearby village. Plenty of interest for shoppers.
PUERTO BANUS and MARBELLA:
Mix with the rich and go star spotting—watch out for Antonio Banderas or you may see him in his home town Malaga !
SELWO SAFARI PARK:
near Estepona or the Botanical Parks at Malaga and Churriana near Alhaurin de la Torre.
"A wonderful break from the stress and strain of life, in beautiful, peaceful surroundings, with very friendly, helpful people and all mod cons. Swim in the pool, walk, barbeque, watch Sky television or just chill out in the well kept gardens or patio are
