Recently modernised to a high-standard, this traditional Swiss chalet offers exceptionally comfortable modern accommodation in a classic Alpine setting on the peaceful outskirts of historic Leysin. A friendly French speaking village, Leysin offers numerous attractions for all ages, with a dozen excellent restaurants, several sports centres, two supermarkets and varied shopping. This 'master apartment' offers an exceptional open-plan living/dining /kitchen area with folding floor-to-ceiling windows to a private balcony. The southerly mountain views are literally stunning. A large bay window (with seating) has a panoramic view from sunrise over Les Diablerets glacier to sunset over the Dents du Midi mountain peaks to the south-west. Top Level
Recently renovated, the top apartment of Chalet Chimère retains the original character of this charming chalet, with wood panelled walls, cosy atmosphere and a striking view of the mountains to the south. There are two large double bedrooms, living room, dining room (seating 6 - 8) / kitchen plus a modern bathroom. Floors are bamboo and oak, and high quality lighting is installed throughout. Each bedroom has a super-king size bed, which can be divided, using a ziplink system, to provide two single divans. A double sofa bed is available in the living room for occasional use, with a sliding wall for privacy to create an extra bedroom if required for overnight visitors (this extra bed is not recommended for long stays). The dining area is well lit, with comfortable bench seating in an alcove, with an impressive southerly view. A newly fitted roof Velux window (auto-closing with rain-detector) allows a flood of light into the dining area and living room.
Leysin, one of the highest mountain villages in the French speaking Vaud canton, is south-facing, at 1260m, overlooking the Rhône Valley. Well-known for its unique climate, claiming to be the sunniest Swiss village, with low humidity, mountains shield Leysin from any cold north winds.
Leysin is linked to the Rhône valley A9 motorway at Aigle by road (kept clear in winter) and a classic mountain cog railway, with fast train connections direct to Geneva city, Geneva Airport and south to Italy. Montreux, Gstaad, Les Mosses, Rougemont, Château d'Oex and Villars are close by. Leysin's a unique village in an exceptional situation with excellent transport options.
Leysin is exceptionally friendly, and part of its charm is the busy local farming community. Many of Switzerland's finest wines are produced in the neighbouring vineyards, with excellent restaurants and shops in the village and surrounding district, featuring local produce, with an emphasis on wine, cheese, honey and mushrooms.
Skiing Information
An attractive Vaud Alps resort, Leysin is traditionally recommended for beginners and intermediates, with good off-piste for advanced skiers and an international snowboarding reputation – “one of the top resorts in Switzerland for snowboarders .... 50km area having virtually no drag-lifts” (British Ski Club guide). Annual Nescafé championships utilises the superb half pipe. 61km of pistes available (14km protected by snow-making equipment), with 14 lifts and 7km of cross country skiing. Skiing from 1330m-2200m is uncrowded, with several traditional family mountain restaurants. Leysin has Europe’s largest toboggan park, excellent multi-lingual Swiss Ski School, ice rink and well-stocked ski hire shops. Ski passes can include neighbouring Villars, Les Diablerets (year round glacier skiing @ 3000m), Gryon and Les Mosses (kids under 9 ski free!). Deposits - 20% on booking with balance due 8 weeks before start of rental. In addition a £450 security deposit is held against breakages and damage, and will be returned 10 days after final inspection and safe return of keys and subject to any deductions. Minor replaceable breakages will not be charged. Holiday travel insurance including cancellation cover is strongly advised for every member of your party. Over Christmas/New Year we are reasonably flexible on start / finish dates.
Payment terms - UK Sterling, Euro or Swiss Franc cheques or transfer direct to relevant accounts. Credit card / PayPal payment on request and at our discretion.
All rental rates include weekly laundered linen and towels, Sky TV, broadband internet access, heating, electricity, gas charges and a reasonable quantity of logs for the wood stoves. A SFr 125 charge will be made for final professional cleaning of the chalet. Swiss Tourist tax is payable at Leysin Tourist office (SFr 2.80 per day for adults, SFr 1.70 per day for ages 7-16, over 60 and under 7 years no charge) and entitles visitors to a generous discount on numerous sporting facilities in the local area including ski passes and lifts.
