A house that is built by the hands of its owners is often the most celebrated - Mark Twain's home in Hartford, Connecticutt, Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford, Robert Lewis Stevenson's Vailima in Samoa, artists Carl and Karin Larsson's much documented Lilla Hyttnas in Sundborn, Sweden, and Carl Jung's home in Bollingen, Switzerland. "The process of building, for all of us " writes architect and author Witold Rybczynski, "was a process of installing ourselves in a place, of establishing a spot where it would be safe to dream. We had to be old enough to recognize the particularity--and limits--of our dreams, but not too old to believe in them."
Such is the Deacon James Horton House, which evolved over the first 250 years of its life in the hands of one adventurous family who landed on the shores of Southold to find safe harbor amongst native Corchaug Indians some 368 years ago, and built the first frame house in what was to become New York. Retaining its sense of place in the early colonization of America, this home was built by the daughter-in-law of one of those courageous men, Barnabas Horton, and is now available for guests to enjoy a unique vacation experience in a home that also holds treasured memories for local descendants.
Long Island, New York offers diversity, glamor, the good life, excitement or solitude; all within 125 miles. Orientated to the water and shaped like a fish, the island lies next to Manhattan, with The North and South Forks making up the tail on the East End. JFK International Airport is close to the eye.
When people talk about vacationing on Long Island, they are referring to the two forks. The South Fork is also known as The Hamptons, a glitzy summer playground for the rich and famous. By contrast, the neighboring and still relatively undiscovered North Fork is a small and enchanting spur of land populated with vegetable farms and orchards, historic clapboard cottages and vineyards. If you ask anyone for details of local celebrities, they won't tell you and anyway, out here everyone is treated like family. Only 2 hours from Manhattan, easily accessible by car or Hampton Jitney, yet a world apart, the east end of Long Island is one of the world’s very special places.
One of the first areas to be settled by the Puritans, the North Fork is a pretty collection of tiny villages, steeped in history and artistic heritage, with miles of sandy bays and shingle beaches where visitors enjoy swimming, kayaking, fishing and boating. Driving end to end takes less than an hour, and lifestyles here tend to be low-key. Wild shorelines can be found on the four-mile stretch of Orient State Park, where shells crunch loudly underfoot on hiking trails, and you can see endangered species such as osprey and piping plover. Greenport is a bustling seaport village, with waterfront bars and fine restaurants serving local seafood and farm produce. Its restored 1920s carousel, new marina, and harbor front is the area's unofficial capital. From here, you can take boat trips or catch a ferry across to Shelter Island and the Hamptons on the South Shore, also enjoy fine local seafood and local wines in some great cafes and restaurants.
The area now boasts about 60 vineyards, offering visitors to Long Island Wine Country the opportunity to sample world-class wine directly from producers, while enjoying beautiful scenery, comfortable accommodation, great food, and a wide range of sports. Activities also include antiquing, art galleries, lighthouses. Riverhead is the place to go for bargain designer clothes and accessories at Tanger Mall, the largest Outlet center in the United States.
We are farmers and fishermen, steeped in the traditional family values that make Southold a wonderful place to live, and we celebrate traditional American holidays in style. Pick Pumpkins in the Fall from the farms, watch the fireworks on July 4th, join in the lighting of the Christmas Tree in winter, and join us in giving thanks for the wonderful harvest in the third week of November. Additional local annual events include Maritime Festival in September, and Jazz on the Vine in February and March.
