Nature is at its most beautiful with the sound and sight of the swallows, butterflies in their array of colours, a hare running past and the wonderful wild flowers.

Enjoy the romance of climbing up, into an antique Neapolitan bed, in a bedroom with exposed stone walls and terracotta floors, featuring traditional night tables and lighting, turn out the lights and dream of the beautiful days ahead exploring Umbria and Tuscany.
The colourful garden
Under the pergola scented with honeysuckle and is a private terrace for relaxing with a good book, enjoying a glass of wine, dining al-fresco or by candle light under a carpet of stars.
From here one can see the rolling hills covered in woodland, olive groves and vineyards where farmers tend their flocks.
Why not decend the stairs lined in lavender to pick organic fruit from our orchard or try your hand at making a pizza in the old garden forno.
Endless activities within easy reach
There are endless activities one can enjoy within easy reach of Vecchia Casa.
From the hamlet one can take numerous walks of varying lengths, stopping for a drink in a famous 4 star hotel or a bar in the neighbouring village of Fontignano.
Our local town of Tavernelle is just 8 minutes by car, where one can find shops, banks, bars, ristoranti, supermarkets and a market on Monday mornings.
Within easy reach in Umbria one may visit: Perugia, the bustling university town with many shops and museums, Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis and home to many of Italy's great art treasures, but also a very pretty town, Orvieto known for it's magnificent cathedral, Etruscan tombs and its wine, Deruta where majolica ware is handcrafted and Gubbio noted for its beauty. In addition there are hundreds of beautiful, unspoilt hilltop fortress towns, mainly from the Medieval period, such as Citta della Pieve, Panicale, Spello, Spoleto and many more. These are testomony to Umbria's turbulent past.
We are just south of Lago Trasimeno where there are many water sports, 2 islands in the middle which may be accessed by ferry, and a bird sanctuary for observing a selection of migratory birds.
Vecchia Casa is just south of Tuscany, where one may easily reach: Cortona, a beautiful hilltop town overlooking the Lago and featured in Frances Mayes's book Under the Tuscan Sun. Then there is Pienza noted for its architecture, Siena for it famous pallio held in the vast cental piazza and Arezzo home to many museums, antique shops and the world renowned fresco series painted by Piero della Francesca. It is however for it's monthly antiques market, held in its ancient streets and piazzas, which Arezzo is most noted. Most famous of all is Florence which has everything!
Vino, vino, vino, Vecchia Casa is located between 4 of Italy's major wine districts in both Tuscany and Umbria. Why not meander from village to village, vineyard to vineyard, dining and tasting the wonderful wines of Orvieto and Montefalco, Montepulciano and Montecino.
We're located in the centre of the area settled by the ancient Etruscans, where one may visit many archeological sites.
Sports activities within easy reach include: fishing, sailing, golf, swimming, tennis, hiking, trekking, biking and horse back riding and potholing.
Cultural activities include visits to: museums, cinemas, theatres, concerts both classical and contemporary, including the famous Umbria Jazz Festival in July. There are also cookery classes and I include shopping as a healthy cultural activity.
Green green Umbria
Umbria is a magical region of Italy, know as its green heart, with mountains, rolling hills and woodland. It's noted for the vast number of fortified towns, villages and borgos all perched a top a hill and unspoilt. Umbria has no large cities, as a result, there is little traffic on our roads, which makes wandering the country lanes a joy. Why not park the car along the roadside to enjoy a picnic under an olive tree and enjoy the marvelous views, while the farmers go about their work.
Most of Umbria is farmland, lovingly tended by those whos families have done the same for generations. Why not come at harvest time from September to December and watch the joy and camaraderie as everyone joins in the various harvests and celebrations.
Umbria is famous for its simple style of cooking as well as the ingredients which are grown here such as suckling pig, earthy, black truffles arguably the finest in the world, wild mushrooms, our renowned olive oil and cheeses, notably pecorino made from sheeps' milk.

Glowing comments from our guests
We stayed at Vecchia Casa in April 2008, for a Romantic week-away (or so my Wife tells me). The exquisitely and thoughtfully appointed apartment,
complete with antiques is the perfect base to relax or visit the numerous historic and beautiful hilltop towns and villages of Umbria and Tuscany. Even a day trip to Rome was relaxing, as the mainline, Venice to Rome railway station is only a short 30 minutes drive away in “sleepy” Chiusi. Great restaurants and a helpful “hostess” in Karen-Louise, ensures we will return to Umbria as soon as possible.
Paul and Dora Morris Rutland UK
My husband and I stayed at Vecchia Casa for 5 days last May, 2006. We wanted a private and lovely stay in Umbria that would allow us to explore nearby areas including Tuscany. Vecchia Casa has all that and more. Karen, the energetic devoted proprietress was a wonderful hostess and we had all the privacy we needed in the tastefully constructed and decorated apartment that connects to her charming country house on a hillock in a tiny commune near Tavernelle. She helped us locate the markets and sites to visit including Panicale, Cortona, Assisi, and Perugia. One needs a car to explore the countryside, but in the entire 5 days of our rental we didn't need to fill up once with gas. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.
